Afro-pop star, Oladapo Oyebanjo, aka D’Banj, has called on African leaders to pay more attention to female empowerment to curb poverty.

D’banj made the call at a media conference held at Terra Kulture, Lagos on Friday.

He spoke on circumstances surrounding the planned remix of Strong Girl – a rallying for women’s empowerment.

He said, “Women and girls everywhere are being held back as a result of a lack of education and economic opportunity. This stops them from achieving their fullest potential.

“The first step is changing this in Nigeria so that we can show the world we are taking women’s empowerment seriously. Poverty is sexist and women are always the most affected. But if we empower one woman, we automatically alleviate the sufferings of many households.”

Dbanj will, alongside Diamond, Banky W, Femi Kuti and ONE.org co-founder, Bono, record the remix of Strong Girl song.

The track, which was released recently, was originally written and recorded by Arielle T, Blessing, Gabriela and Judith Sephuma. Others linked with it are Selmor Mtukudzi, Vanessa Mdee, Victoria Kimani, Waje and YemiAlade.

Lending her voice to the call, Nollywood actress and singer, OmotolaJalade- Ekiende, who also doubles as ONE ambassador, said, “The male artistes involved in the project are adding their voices to Strong Girl’s call for action because poverty is truly sexist, and it won’t end unless world leaders act now to help girls and women reach their full potential. Our message is loud and it’s impossible to ignore, I hope that our leaders are listening.”
